3 Environmentally Friendly Camping Tips

Over recent years, more and more Americans are getting the “camping bug.” They are ditching traditional resort vacations for time out on the road with their families, staying at various campsites, and spending time with friends along the way. At Carefree RV, we’re so excited to see this! However, as you join this camping community, it’s important to remember that the whole point of camping is to experience nature in a way you wouldn’t normally. With that in mind, our team has put together a list of ways to be mindful of your camping habits and be kind to the environment along the way.

1. Skip Unnecessary Gadgets

Once you enter the RV world, you start to see how many gadgets and tools on the market are supposed to make camping easier. And while it's true that some of these gadgets are pretty cool and tempting, we always recommend carefully choosing items that will be used most often and have multiple uses. You'll have less to pack, less to remember, and more time to enjoy your trip. Also, if possible, we recommend renting or purchasing used equipment. This is a great way to save money while lowering your environmental impact.

2. Check Your Products

Next, we encourage you to think carefully about the products you'll use while camping. Lotions, soap, sunscreen, and bug repellent are a few examples of typical necessities. You have probably thought about how these products would affect your body, but have you considered how they may harm the environment? You should avoid using water-soluble products because they can wash off your body and contaminate nearby lakes and rivers. Instead, look into products that protect your skin from the sun and insects while being environmentally friendly.

3. Leave No Trace

Finally, respecting the authorized areas when choosing your campsite and exploring is important to protect the local species. Although "off-roading" might sound fun, you risk unintentionally upsetting the animals and plants struggling to survive there. This is especially true in the spring when growing and nesting behaviors among birds, animals, and plants are just starting. Let the native wildlife and plants flourish!
